Day 02; Vitre

Day two starts with a breakfast I hadn't expected so this Chambre d'Hote is a very good deal. Today includes Fougeres, and also Vitre which I know from my last cycle tour and it is worth revisiting.

France is known for it's iconic 2CV car and I found one place where the old ones get retired or renovated.

For an overview of Fougeres take a look here https://thegoodlifefrance.com/what-to-do-on-a-day-trip-to-fougeres-brittany/ though the main attraction is the castle.
Walking the lower streets is charming and someone takes the trouble to tell me I had left my helmet behind; I would have absent mindedly cycled off without it.

Vitré is beautiful and after pitching the tent I walk back into town through the park to visit the two main churches and walk the historic streets.

VitrĂ© Castle has clear signs of phased development and redevelopment.

Footnote
In a world where we are all trying to do the right thing for the planet a cycle touring holiday buys you some brownie points as reducing the number of flights you take is a big win. For some simple information take a look at https://flightfree.co.uk/.

I am lucky in living close to the Channel so hopping on a ferry doesn't incur much time or cost. Travel costs for this trip are:
.. £21 for the train to Portsmouth
.. £138 for the overnight ferry to St Malo with a cabin
.. £72 for the Nice -> Paris train
.. £38 for the Dieppe to Newhaven ferry
.. £21 for the train back to London

These aren't bad prices to get to Europe and back and as suggested above train travel in Europe isn't as costly as in the UK.

Concluding Notes

This post is really a note for myself for future tours. The Inspiration  for this tour was the book France En Velo; excellent both for plann...
